Progressive academic Noam Chomsky said that the American left should be more careful with what they are trying to pass the Antifa group as. The leftist keep saying that Antifa is a noble movement against hate, intolerance and fascism in the U.S.
During an interview with The Washington Examiner, the professor said that Antifa is not that unlike the white nationalist/Nazi groups they claim to oppose. The leftists use this group only to increase violence.
“Antifa” is getting a lot of media attention since the recent events in Charlottesville, but Chomsky says the anti-fascists feed the fire they seek to extinguish. He said to the Washington Examiner reporters:
“As for Antifa, it’s a minuscule fringe of the Left, just as its predecessors were. It’s a major gift to the Right, including the militant Right, who are exuberant.”
Many activists who have connections to Antifa consider themselves anarchists or socialists. They often hide their identities and cover themselves up with black clothes. Chomsky added:
“What they do is often wrong in principle – like blocking talks – and [the movement] is generally self-destructive. When confrontation shifts to the arena of violence, it’s the toughest and most brutal who win – and we know who that is. That’s quite apart from the opportunity costs – the loss of the opportunity for education, organizing, and serious and constructive activism.”
With his statements, Chomsky showed that he agrees with President Donald Trump’s condemnation of violent actions and hate coming from “many sides.” To be fair, a lot of conservatives also agree with this.
This Thursday, in a column for The Hill, conservative Sheriff David Clarke said that Antifa is just as dangerous as white nationalist/Nazi groups:
“The very next day after Charlottesville, some were trying to cloak the liberal riot-starters who showed up itching for a confrontation by portraying them as a force for good. But the truth was very different. In reality, extreme leftist movements — be they Antifa or Black Lives Matter — are in the same category as neo-Nazis and white supremacists.
Yes, I said it. These are all fringe hate groups that should be condemned. There are no good guys involved. It’s remarkable that the political left continues to treat Antifa and Black Lives Matter as mainstream movements. It must stop.”
