Richard Nixon had his very own “list of enemies,” and he used to “wiretap” them just in case someone says or does something he should know about. The Watergate scandal was sure a thing back in the 1970, and America was shocked to learn that he “wiretapped” the Oval Office and the offices of his opponents.

And now we’ve got a Democratic president who has done the same thing. The difference is that Obama’s wiretapping is way more “pro” than Nixon’s spy game.

Trump triggered this particular jump scare with the tweet on March 4 that he “just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” He followed with such tirades as “How low has President Obama gone to tap my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!”

However, it was discovered that the wiretapping of Donald Trump wasn’t something new for Obama. He has done this before. WikiLeaks released a list of individuals who were wiretapped by the Obama Administration:

  • The US National Security Agency bugged a private climate change strategy meeting between UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin;
  • Obama bugged Chief of Staff of UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for long term interception targeting his Swiss phone;
  • Obama singled out the Director of the Rules Division of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Johann Human, and targeted his Swiss phone for long term interception;
  • Obama stole sensitive Italian diplomatic cables detailing how Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu implored Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to help patch up his relationship with then-US President

The report suggests that “Obama wiretapped various individuals in the US media that were reporting information not flattering to the Obama administration,” reports The World Updater.

So, is Obama any different than Nixon? No. Wiretapping will always be wiretapping, regardless of whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat.
